WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones Starting June 2025
In a recent update, WhatsApp announced it will end support for certain older iPhone models beginning June 1, 2025. This move aligns with the messaging platform’s regular assessment of device compatibility and aims to enhance security and improve performance for its user base.
The discontinuation will affect iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1, which includes models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Notably, these models have already been labeled as “obsolete” by Apple and are no longer eligible for either hardware servicing or new software updates.
The Meta-owned platform explained that the decision is based on the need to ensure secure communication in an increasingly digital world. Devices that are unable to receive routine security patches become vulnerable to cyberattacks and lack the infrastructure needed to support WhatsApp’s evolving features.
In a statement on its updated FAQ section, WhatsApp noted, “We regularly review supported operating systems and adjust compatibility based on the security and technical needs of the app. Unsupported devices may lack critical updates or the capabilities required for our new features.”
WhatsApp Business Also Affected
The update is not limited to individual users alone; it extends to those using WhatsApp Business. Entrepreneurs and small business owners relying on these older iPhones will need to consider upgrading their devices to continue engaging with customers and managing their communications.
The oldest iPhone models that will retain support post-June 2025 are the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. However, these devices no longer receive major iOS updates, suggesting their future with WhatsApp could also be limited in upcoming reviews.
Emphasis on Security and Feature Access
WhatsApp’s move to end support for outdated devices reflects its broader mission to prioritize user security and privacy. The platform has recently rolled out advanced chat privacy features such as disappearing messages, chat locks, and enhanced media protections — features that rely on modern software capabilities.
Analysts believe this update is part of a wider industry trend, as technology companies phase out legacy support to focus on new innovations and safety measures. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to newer iPhone models to avoid disruptions in their messaging experience.
Failing to do so may result in the loss of access to all chats, media, and business interactions stored within the app.
