‘Regretting You’ Tops Slow Halloween Weekend Box Office in North America

Paramount’s Regretting You, the latest film adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel, claimed the top spot at the North American box office over Halloween weekend, despite a notably sluggish turnout across theaters.

Directed by Josh Boone, the romantic drama follows a mother and daughter — played by Allison Williams and McKenna Grace — as they navigate grief, love, and self-discovery after a family tragedy.

According to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, the film earned $8.1 million in its second week, narrowly edging out Universal’s horror sequel Black Phone 2, which collected $8.0 million.

Low Halloween turnout hits box office

The typically strong Halloween weekend failed to deliver major numbers, with total revenue for the top 12 films reaching only $44.8 million — a 32 percent drop compared to the same weekend last year.

Industry analysts attributed the weak turnout to the absence of a major horror or superhero release, genres that traditionally drive October audiences.

Close competition among top five films

Second-place finisher Black Phone 2 brought back Ethan Hawke’s chilling villain, this time haunting a group of young campers. The sequel continues to perform steadily but fell just short of overtaking Regretting You.

Last week’s box office leader, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, slipped to third place with $6 million. The Japanese anime adaptation tells the story of a teenager named Denji, who fuses with his pet devil to become the powerful “Chainsaw Man.”

In fourth place was Yorgos Lanthimos’s dark satire Bugonia, starring Emma Stone as a high-profile CEO kidnapped by conspiracy theorists convinced she is an alien. The film earned $4.8 million in its limited North American run.

Rounding out the top five was the 40th-anniversary re-release of Back to the Future, which drew nostalgic fans back to theaters and earned a solid $4.3 million.

Other notable titles

The rest of the top 10 included:

  • Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere ($3.8 million)
  • Tron: Ares ($2.8 million)
  • Stitch Ahead ($2.1 million)
  • Good Fortune ($1.5 million)
  • One Battle After Another ($1.2 million)

While the weekend proved slow overall, Hollywood insiders expect a rebound in November as major releases like Gladiator II and Moana 2 hit theaters, reigniting audience interest and box office momentum.
