Huawei Mate 90 Launches With New Design, Upgraded Cameras and On-Device AI

Huawei has officially introduced the Mate 90 in China as the standard model in its latest flagship smartphone series. The new device combines a refreshed design with upgraded cameras, a powerful Kirin 9030 chipset and new artificial intelligence capabilities.

The Huawei Mate 90 runs on HarmonyOS 7 and comes with a large 6,600mAh battery. The combination of new hardware and software features positions the smartphone as a flagship device focused on performance, photography and intelligent on-device experiences.

The Mate 90 measures 161.9 × 75.7 × 7.95mm and weighs approximately 217 grams. Huawei is offering the phone in four color options: Lattice Green, Lattice Pink, Zero White and Obsidian Black.

The Lattice Green and Lattice Pink versions feature a distinctive textured pattern on the rear panel. This lattice-inspired finish gives the smartphone a different visual identity compared with conventional glass-backed flagship phones.

On the front, the Huawei Mate 90 features a 6.75-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2832 × 1280 pixels. The panel supports an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, allowing the phone to adjust screen performance based on the content being displayed.

The display also supports 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and a 300Hz touch sampling rate. These specifications are designed to provide smoother interactions while improving the viewing experience across different types of content.

Huawei says the screen can display 1.07 billion colors and supports the P3 color gamut. The display is protected by the company’s third-generation Kunlun Glass, adding an extra layer of protection against everyday wear and damage.

Durability is another area where the Mate 90 receives significant attention. The smartphone carries an IP68 rating and is designed to withstand immersion at depths of up to six meters under specified conditions.

The device also features IP69 protection against high-temperature and high-pressure water jets. This combination of ratings gives the Mate 90 added resistance against water and dust in demanding environments.

Photography remains a major focus of Huawei’s latest flagship. The Mate 90 comes with upgraded XMAGE camera technology, continuing Huawei’s push to improve smartphone photography through advanced imaging hardware and software.

The phone is also powered by the Kirin 9030 chipset, which serves as the core processing platform for the device. Huawei has paired the processor with HarmonyOS 7 and on-device artificial intelligence features to provide a more integrated software experience.

The addition of on-device AI is particularly significant as smartphone manufacturers increasingly move artificial intelligence features directly onto mobile hardware. This approach can allow certain AI functions to operate locally on the device rather than relying entirely on cloud-based processing.

With its new design, high-resolution OLED display, XMAGE cameras, large battery, Kirin 9030 processor and HarmonyOS 7, the Huawei Mate 90 represents the company’s latest approach to the premium smartphone market.

The phone has initially been launched in China, while details about availability in other international markets may depend on Huawei’s future launch plans.
