Government Allocates Rs. 2 Billion to Combat Fake News
A Strategic Move to Protect State Institutions
The federal government has approved a substantial allocation of Rs. 2 billion to intensify its efforts against the spread of fake news. This decision, announced during an Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, underscores the growing concern about disinformation campaigns targeting state institutions.
Funding Breakdown and Objectives
Of the allocated amount, Rs. 1.945 billion will be directed to the Ministry of Defence, with a focus on countering politically motivated disinformation. Key initiatives include:
- Technology Upgrades: Rs. 1.22 billion to bolster ISPR’s ability to tackle advanced fake news tools.
- Cybersecurity Enhancements: Rs. 723 million to improve the digital defense infrastructure.
The Role of ISPR in Fighting Fake News
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) plays a pivotal role in countering misinformation. Army Chief General Asim Munir has previously highlighted the urgency of addressing propaganda that threatens national stability. With enhanced technological capabilities, ISPR aims to detect, analyze, and neutralize disinformation campaigns more effectively.
Sustainable Measures for the Future
The government also plans to incorporate Rs. 1.6 billion as an annual recurring cost for these initiatives in the upcoming fiscal year. This long-term commitment reflects the importance of maintaining robust defenses against evolving disinformation tactics.
