Umar Gul Poised to Guide Pakistan Shaheens in Packed 2025 Season

The Pakistan Shaheens are entering a high-stakes international cycle, with their itinerary featuring competitive tours in both Australia and the United Kingdom. In line with this demanding schedule, the PCB is finalizing the appointment of Umar Gul as the team’s new head coach.

The 42-year-old former fast bowler is no stranger to high-pressure environments. Post-retirement, Gul’s coaching résumé has expanded rapidly. He’s contributed his expertise to Quetta Gladiators, Afghanistan’s national team, and the Pakistan senior men’s side. Most notably, Gul assumed coaching responsibilities during the 2023 Test series in Australia and the early 2024 T20I series vs New Zealand, stepping in after Morne Morkel’s departure.

Now, Gul’s challenge will be to mould and mentor a group of promising cricketers during the 2025 Top End T20 Series in Darwin, where the Shaheens will compete from August 14 to 24. Their first fixture will be against Bangladesh ‘A’, one of the tournament’s strongest sides, at the famed TIO Stadium.

The Top End T20 Series will feature a robust lineup—11 teams playing 36 matches across multiple venues in Darwin. With back-to-back appearances in the 2023 final and 2024 semi-final, the Shaheens are entering the competition with high expectations.

Alongside Gul’s appointment, the PCB has made structural changes in the coaching staff. Shane McDermott, an experienced Australian fielding expert, has replaced Mohammad Masroor, while Grant Luden returns as the Strength and Conditioning Coach, a role he previously held during successful stints.

With this blend of international exposure, local talent, and seasoned coaching support, the Pakistan Shaheens are positioning themselves as serious contenders for silverware—and long-term national team contributions.
