Sindh to See Province-Wide EV Charging Network via Chinese Investment
Green Transportation, Local Jobs, and Energy Relief at the Heart of Partnership
In a strategic push toward sustainable mobility, Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that a Chinese auto company will build electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across all districts of the province.
The announcement followed a ministerial visit to Chery Automobile’s headquarters in China, where Memon and Provincial Energy Minister Nasir Shah discussed future collaboration.
Charging Stations Every 50 Kilometers
The plan includes setting up EV charging points every 50 kilometers, ensuring access in both densely populated and remote areas. This evenly spaced infrastructure model is expected to remove range anxiety—one of the primary barriers to EV adoption.
Memon emphasized that the charging network will drive green mobility while also generating skilled employment across Sindh.
Karachi to House EV Mini-Truck Assembly Plant
Alongside the charging initiative, an electric mini-truck assembly plant is being established in Karachi, aiming to support local EV manufacturing. By reducing import dependency, this move is expected to lower the price of EVs for Pakistani consumers.
Industry analysts view this as a significant development that could place Karachi as a key EV production and export hub in the future.
Solar for Households and Clean Energy Access
Minister Nasir Shah also spotlighted renewable energy developments. With solar systems being distributed to economically disadvantaged families, Sindh is pushing for greater energy equity.
The shift toward household-level solar power could substantially reduce grid demand and mitigate the impact of soaring energy prices on working-class families.
NEPRA Slashes EV Charging Tariffs
Meanwhile, NEPRA approved a dramatic cut in EV charging tariffs, slashing the rate from Rs 45.55 to Rs 23.57 per unit. This move supports the affordability of EV ownership and is expected to encourage broader investment in charging infrastructure.
