Instagram to Remove End-to-End Encryption for DMs, Meta Confirms
Meta has announced plans to discontinue the option for end-to-end encrypted direct messages on Instagram by May 8, 2026. The company stated that the feature is being removed due to low adoption, as only a small number of users had enabled encrypted messaging.
In an official statement, Meta explained, “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months.” The decision highlights the challenges social media platforms face in balancing privacy features with user engagement and adoption.
Meta also reminded users that those seeking end-to-end encrypted messaging can continue to use WhatsApp, which offers encryption by default for all chats. The move underscores Meta’s broader approach of consolidating privacy-focused messaging features on platforms where adoption is higher.
Security experts note that the removal of this option on Instagram may impact users who relied on DMs for private communications. While Instagram will still allow regular messaging, the lack of default encryption could raise concerns for privacy-conscious users.
The change will take effect in May 2026, giving users time to transition sensitive conversations to other encrypted platforms if needed. Meta emphasized that the decision aims to streamline features while continuing to offer secure messaging through other applications within its ecosystem.
