TCL has expanded its NxtPaper smartphone family with the introduction of the P80 Ultra, P80 Pro and standard P80, giving consumers three new options with different display and camera configurations.
The P80 Ultra sits at the top of the new lineup and marks a major development for TCL’s display technology. It is the company’s first smartphone to combine NxtPaper technology with an AMOLED panel.
TCL says the P80 Ultra features what it describes as the world’s first AMOLED display integrated with NxtPaper technology, bringing together OLED display characteristics with the company’s eye-comfort-focused screen technology.
The flagship smartphone comes with a 6.83-inch AMOLED display offering a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate is designed to provide smoother scrolling, animations and supported content.
The screen also supports 100 percent DCI-P3 color coverage, allowing the device to deliver a broad color range for photos, videos and other visual content.
Peak brightness is rated at up to 3,200 nits, giving the display a high brightness ceiling that can help improve visibility in bright environments.
One of the more notable elements of the P80 Ultra is TCL’s approach to screen polarization. The company uses circular polarization rather than the linear polarization commonly associated with OLED displays.
According to TCL, the technology is intended to create a more natural viewing experience. It is also designed to reduce viewing issues that can occur when OLED screens are used while wearing polarized glasses.
The P80 Pro shares much of the hardware approach found in the P80 Ultra but makes a significant change to its camera setup by leaving out the periscope camera.
The standard P80 takes a different approach. It uses the same AMOLED display panel but does not include TCL’s NxtPaper technology.
This gives TCL’s new lineup a clearer range of choices, with the P80 Ultra positioned as the most feature-rich option, the P80 Pro offering much of the flagship hardware with a different camera configuration, and the standard P80 focusing on the AMOLED display without NxtPaper.
The P80 Ultra’s combination of AMOLED technology and NxtPaper represents an important step in TCL’s effort to differentiate its smartphones through display innovation.
NxtPaper has become one of TCL’s key technologies for devices designed around comfortable viewing. Bringing the technology to an AMOLED panel allows the company to apply that approach to a display type widely used in modern premium smartphones.
The 6.83-inch screen also gives the P80 Ultra a large viewing area, which could appeal to users who frequently watch videos, browse the web or consume other visual content on their phones.
