Punjab Makes Online Attendance Mandatory in Government Schools to Improve Monitoring System

The Punjab Education Department has introduced a new policy making online attendance compulsory for both students and teachers in government schools across the province. The move is aimed at strengthening digital monitoring and improving accountability within the education system.

Under the new instructions, attendance must be marked through the official system, and any student or teacher who fails to register their presence online will be considered absent. The policy applies uniformly across all government schools, signaling a stricter approach toward compliance and record-keeping.

Officials have also warned that strict action will be taken against schools that fail to update attendance and related data on the School Information System. The directive emphasizes the importance of real-time data entry to ensure transparency and accuracy in reporting.

Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of education districts have been instructed to ensure 100% compliance with the system. They are responsible for monitoring implementation and taking corrective measures where necessary to avoid lapses in data submission.

Education authorities believe the digital attendance system will help reduce discrepancies in record-keeping and provide a clearer picture of school performance and student participation. It is also expected to improve administrative efficiency by minimizing manual errors and delays.

The initiative reflects a broader shift toward digital governance in Pakistan’s education sector, where technology is increasingly being used to track performance and improve service delivery. By centralizing attendance data, the department aims to enhance oversight and ensure better policy planning.

Experts suggest that while the system can improve transparency, its success will depend on proper infrastructure, training, and consistent enforcement at the school level. Reliable internet access and staff readiness will also play a key role in its effectiveness.

The Punjab government’s latest step highlights its focus on modernizing education management through technology-driven solutions, with accountability and data accuracy at the core of the reform.
